What is Banarasi Weaving?
Banarasi weaving is the handloom brocade tradition of Varanasi, known for silk sarees and fabrics with woven motifs in gold and silver zari.

Varanasi and nearby weaving clusters in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

How is it made?
The design is set on the loom as a pattern (traditionally with jacquard cards). Weavers then interlace silk and zari threads by hand, often over several weeks for a single saree.

Why is it special?
Motifs such as florals, jaal and buta are woven into the fabric itself — not printed or embroidered — which gives the brocade its depth and shine.
