What is Chikankari?
Chikankari is a hand embroidery style from Lucknow, traditionally white thread on fine white cotton or muslin, now also worked in colours.

How is it made?
The pattern is block-printed on the fabric with washable ink, embroidered by hand using stitches such as tepchi, bakhiya and phanda, and then washed to remove the print.

Why is it special?
Each piece passes through the hands of printers, embroiderers and washers; finer stitches and denser work take many days.
