What is Kalamkari?
Kalamkari is a textile art in which cotton cloth is hand-painted with a pen (kalam) or block-printed using natural dyes.

Where is it from?
Andhra Pradesh — Srikalahasti (pen work) and Machilipatnam (block printing).

How is it made?
The cloth is treated with myrobalan and milk, outlines are drawn or printed, colours are applied with mordants, and the fabric is washed and dried many times.

Why is it special?
A long, multi-stage natural-dye process; Srikalahasti work is often narrative and completely hand-drawn.
History & tradition
A centuries-old tradition; Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam Kalamkari are GI-registered.
